Diabetes Mellitus is not a Negative Prognostic Factor for patients undergoing Hip Arthroscopy

Study by American Hip Institute Research Foundation

Des Plaines, Ill. (July 2021) – A recent study conducted by the American Hip Institute Research Foundation (AHIRF) has demonstrated that both patients with and without Diabetes Mellitus (DM) showed favorable outcomes at a minimum of 2 years follow-up after hip arthroscopy. There were no statistically significant differences in demographics, preoperative radiographic imaging, intraoperative findings, procedures, preoperative scores, follow-up scores, and rates of complication, revision, or conversion to total hip arthroscopy (THA).

Development of a Predictive Algorithm for Symptomatic Hip Abductor Tears in patients undergoing primary Hip Arthroscopy

Study by American Hip Institute Research Foundation

Des Plaines, Ill. (February 2021) - In recent research conducted by the American Hip Institute Research Foundation (AHIRF), a predictive algorithm has been developed for symptomatic hip abductor tears in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy. These included patients underwent primary hip arthroscopic surgery between March 2009 and December 2019. Using a stepwise logistic regression, it was identified that increased BMI, increasing age and female sex are all significant independent predictors of hip abductor tear presence in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for femeroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). This development provides an important clinically relevant tool for preoperatively identifying the probability of a symptomatic hip abductor tear in these patients.
