Dr. Kuhns was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in the northern suburbs. He spent his undergraduate years at Colgate University where he majored in chemistry with a minor in history. He then returned to Chicago where he received a master's degree in Neuroscience from Northwestern before attending medical school in Cleveland, Ohio at Case Western Reserve University school of medicine. He developed an interest in hip preservation surgery in medical school and graduated with a distinction in research after being inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He continued to develop his passion for hip pathology while in orthopedic residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, winning the Kenneth Dehaven Research Award for his research linking femoroacetabular impingement to hip osteoarthritis. He then spent one year of fellowship in adult hip preservation and reconstruction at the world-renowned Steadman Clinic under the mentorship of Drs. Philippon and Matta. He completed his final year of training in advanced hip preservation at the American Hip Institute. He is the author of over 40 articles and book chapters related to the treatment of hip dysfunction.

Dr. Kuhns is dedicated to the comprehensive management of adult hip pain. This includes non-operative strategies such as hip specific physical therapy, medication management, and intra or extra-articular injections. From a surgical perspective, he specializes in complex primary and revision hip arthroscopy, open hip preservation including periacetabular and proximal femoral osteotomies, as well as robotic anterior approach total hip arthroplasty. His focus is working together with patients to identify a customized treatment strategy designed to optimize their return to function and the activities they enjoy regardless of their age.
