NHL Superstar, Patrick Kane, Intends to Rejuvenate His Career After Undergoing a Hip Resurfacing Procedure

Building a Legendary Career

Since being selected as the first overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft, Patrick Kane has amassed one of the most impressive resumes in all of sports, earning him the honor of one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. The offensive specialist has won three Stanley Cup trophies, a Hart Memorial Most Valuable Player Trophy, and was awarded the Art Ross Trophy as the scoring champion in 2015-16. Kane has also represented the United States team in two Winter Olympics.

During this past season, the 34-year-old Kane dealt with a lingering hip injury that likely prevented him from performing at his usual level. Yesterday, he opted to have surgery for his hip pain and underwent a hip resurfacing procedure.

Birmingham Hip Resurfacing

The Birmingham hip resurfacing (BHR) is an alternative to the total hip replacement that preserves more of the healthy bone in the hip joint. The procedure involves removing the arthritic or damaged bone and cartilage from the head of the femur (thigh bone) and replacing it with a metal cap. The damage in the acetabulum (socket) is also replaced with a thin metal cup.

The BHR has several unique advantages, including minimal bone loss with a smaller implant, lower risk of dislocation, great mobility, reduced wear-and-tear with high-impact activities, and easier revision surgeries. The procedure is considered ideal for younger, active men.

Looking Forward

Patrick Kane’s expected recovery time after the hip resurfacing is 4-6 months, placing his return sometime after the start of the next NHL season. He joins a growing list of high-level athletes opting for this procedure to allow for a quick recovery and strong return to play. Kane hopes to continue playing at a high level for years to come, and the BHR procedure he underwent may give him the opportunity to do just that, pain-free, and return to form as one of the best scoring threats in the league.
